Electrical System

The Hatteras LRC was originally delivered with 32-volt house batteries only.  Upgrades aboard KINGDOM have added a set of 24-volt house batteries, and converted many DC house utility functions to this more modern configuration.  Automatic bilge pumps, for example, are all 24-volt units.  These are much easier to locate and cheaper to replace as needed.

Most of the truly heavy-duty DC electric motors aboard remain powered by the 32-volt house battery system.  Examples include the anchor winch, hydraulic pumps for the autopilot and stabilizers, as well as the macerator pumps for the four heads.  The good news is that these are extremely reliable motors, which seldom require replacement.

Shore Power

Shore Power is supplied via two 50-amp service inlets located forward and two inlets located aft.  This allows the boat to be moored alongside, bow-in, or stern-to, with ample electric service options at either end or both.  Two 50-foot power cords are aboard, with various conversion fittings.

Shore Power is routed to two ConstaVolt model 22-220-009 50-amp Isolation Transformers, located starboard in the engine room.

Generators

Northern Lights model M843N-12N, 12 KW Generator, producing 80 amps of usable electric power.  This powerful generator can meet all the yacht’s electrical needs, including both the 110 volt and 220 volt systems.  It can run the air conditioners and watermaker simultaneously, both of which require 220 volts.

Northern Lights model M673-6N, 6 KW Generator, producing 40 amps of usable power.  This generator is used when there is no need for air conditioning or water-making.  It will power the Inverter/Converter, keeping the batteries charged when the main engines are not running.

Both generators are enclosed in sound shields.  They both have effective mufflers, and are not noisy when running at an anchorage.  Each generator has it’s own 12 Volt starting battery, and each of these has its own dedicated battery charger.

Inverter/Convertor

Trace Engineering Power Conversion Center: This 4KW programmable inverter/converter accepts all inbound electrical power, whether from shore sources or onboard generator sources, and distributes it to the appropriate battery storage location.  It keeps the 24 volt house batteries charged directly, and supplies 110-volt power to the various dedicated 12, 24, and 32 volt battery chargers for the generator starting batteries, the engine starting batteries, and the bow thruster batteries.

The 220-volt system is the exception.  This is powered directly from either shore power via the isolation transformers, or from the 12 KW Northern Lights generator.  The master power selection switches in the Pilothouse allow the owner to select from a combination of shore power and/or generator power sources for 110 volt and 220 volt systems.

A NewMar DC Converter provides 12 Volt DC power to the Pilothouse and Flybridge electronics and engine gauges.  It steps it down from the 24 Volt Battery Bank.

House Battery Banks

Xantrex Link-10 House Battery Monitor, located in the Pilothouse, displays the real-time status of the 24-volt house battery bank, including current amps, current inflow and outflow usage.

House Batteries – 32-Volt Bank

Four 8D Batteries, new October 2009, form the 32 Volt House Bank.  These are used to start the main engines, and to operate the bow winch when hoisting the anchor, and to power each of the macerator pumps in the four marine heads.  When the main engines are running, the Port Engine’s 32 Volt Alternator charges this battery bank directly.

Sentry model G330-3NL Battery Charger is dedicated to keeping 32 Volt House Battery Bank fully charged.  It accepts 110 Volt power from the inverter or shore power, and provides charging output up to 30 amps.

House Batteries – 24 Volt Bank

Six 4D Batteries, new August 2008, form the 24 Volt House Bank.  These are used to power the remaining small DC motors, such as the bilge pumps, and to provide 110-volt AC power via the Trace Inverter for house lights, etc. when no shore power is available, and generators are not running. When the main engines are running, the Starboard Engine’s 24 Volt Alternator charges this battery bank directly.

Other Engine Room Systems

FCI Water Maker

800 Gallons of fresh water per day can be provided by the top-of –the-line FCI reverse-osmosis water maker.  Fresh water tankage available aboard is 400 gallons.  One could conceivably fill them twice per day.  Actual usage is usually no more than a maximum of 100 gallons per day, and that is when the washer/dryer is being used.

Hot Water Heater

30 gallon capacity, 110 Volt, New in March 2009

Electric Oil Change System

Reverso Model GP 3013, installed new in December 2007, automatically removes old oil, or pumps new oil into the selected engine at the touch of a button.  It is permanently plumbed to both main engines and both generators, and is powered by the 24 Volt battery bank.  This is an enormous time and labor-saving device.

This Holding Tank Alert System, turns on a bright LED light when the holding tank is nearing its 200 gallon capacity.  Time to pump out!

Fuel Systems

KINGDOM has the capacity to carry a total of 2400 gallons of diesel in four keel tanks.  The forward tank holds 1200 gallons, the midships tank holds 400 gallons, the aft tank holds 500 gallons, and the lazarette tank holds 300 gallons.

In the engine room there is a fuel selection manifold, where the captain may select the source of fuel for each main engine, and select which tank to return overflow to.  This allows the captain to move fuel between tanks as needed for trim, and at the same time polish the fuel as it moves from one tank to the other.

Each engine is provided with a set of two RACOR Fuel Filter/Water Separators.  By switching from one filter to the other, the engineer can change a fouled fuel filter while underway, and without re-priming the engine.
